The third wave of Corona has led to a record increase in Corona victims in Hungary. According to official figures, 207 people died in connection with the virus in the past 24 hours, and 6,502 new infections were registered. A tighter lockdown had already been imposed from March 8-22. Prime Minister Viktor Orban planned to inform the state radio on Friday about further measures and possible gradual relaxations.
This was stated by Chancellery Minister Gergely Gulyas at a press conference in Budapest on Thursday. According to the politician, the peak of the third Corona wave is expected at the end of March, after which it will radically level off in view of the broad vaccination campaign. There would be sufficient capacity in hospitals. There would be an additional 1,700 intensive care beds with ventilators and 11,000 free hospital beds.
Regarding the vaccination coverage rate, Gulyas recalled that Hungary was second in the EU behind Malta. The procurement of vaccines from Russia and China contributed to the good result, he said. By May/June, immunization of the population could be achieved and a fourth wave prevented. It was only a matter of weeks before the high numbers could level off.
